What is a Doula?

A DOULA is a “mother’s helper”. Their role is to mother the birthing mother. As an Antepartum, Birth and Postpartum Doula I care for the physical and emotional needs of the mother-to-be and the new mother.
The term “Doula” comes from the Ancient Greek word meaning “female servant.” Marshall Klaus and John Kennell, who conducted clinical trials on the medical outcomes of doula-attended births, adopted the term to refer to a person providing labor support. The term is also used for women who come to support the new family just after the birth, mothering the new family.
Numerous studies have shown how positively Doulas influence birth. Women with a doula at her side will most likely experience shorter labors with fewer complications, increased positive feelings about the childbirth experience, less need for labor-inducing drugs, less medical interventions such as vacuum extraction and cesareans, as well as a increased pain tolerance.

If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.

Laurie Reinke is a birth and postpartum doula and one of the most amazing women I've met. She speaks fluent German and is a native English speaker. She was there for me every step of the way and has supported many women here in Berlin. She is *your* trusted person at the hospital to support you physically and emotionally during the birth.

There are a few people who have supported me in such a way like Laurie did at such an important and vulnerable moment of my life. After birth she was there for my American husband, son and me helping us with everything along the way- physically with healthy food, mother massages and pelvic floor awareness, mentally with strategies to cope with little sleep, and emotionally by showing great empathy. Laurie also facilitated the needed documents from the German authorities.
All in all, Laurie created a safe and supportive environment in which we could blossom as parents.
